Heal Your Throat Chakra with 4 Yoga Practices

Throat Chakra Healing

The words you speak hold such importance.

They can guide others, share your feelings, or connect you with another soul.

Communication is a vital part of life. Whether it’s external, communicating with those around you either verbally or non-verbally, or it’s internal, processing your thoughts and clarifying your ideas.

Without the ability to communicate, you would not be able to survive…

If you ever find it hard to get your point across… or maybe you’re interested in aligning yourself more with the truth… you need to focus your healing efforts on your Throat Chakra…

If you’re not familiar with the Chakra system, your Throat Chakra is your center for communication and is located in the very center of your throat. Blockages are common in the Throat Chakra, but they can easily be removed with a few simple yoga practices.

First, I’ll share two practices that will open this Chakra to invite more energy into the body. One practice is a yoga pose and the other is a breathing technique.

Then I’ll walk you through two more practices that will stop energy from leaking out of the Throat Chakra... again a pose and a breathing technique.

So whether you need to invite more energy in, or simply nourish and protect the energy that you already have, you’ll find a simple yoga practice to help you heal your Throat Chakra

Let’s take a moment to review the Throat Chakra before we jump in…

What is the Throat Chakra?

Your Throat Chakra is associated with clear and truthful communication, and is located on the front of your throat and back of your neck.

When this energy center is balanced, you’ll be able to clearly express ideas, speak your truth, and offer sound advice. But when your Throat is out of balance, you’ll find yourself lying, gossiping, verbally abusing others, and having physical pain in your neck and shoulders.

If you’re looking for a way to…

  • Connect with your inner truth
  • Clearly and effectively speak your mind
  • Express your creative ideas
  • And more

...Then simply follow these yogic practices to heal your Throat Chakra.

If you need to heal more than just your Throat Chakra, then I invite you to try my Guided Healing Sessions.  Whether you’re experiencing physical, emotional, or spiritual issues, these guided healing sessions will make it easy for you to take control of your health.

To start on the path of healing your Throat Chakra, I find it best to start by opening the throat so that you can invite in more positive energy…

Fish Pose

This pose is considered a backbend, but is also an effective way to open the front of your throat so that more positive energy can flow into your body.

To start, lie on your back with your knees bent and pointing up at the sky. Place your palms down on the floor and slide them underneath your bottom.

Tuck your elbows in close to your body and make sure that your forearms are flat against the earth.

On an inhale, press your arms into the ground so that your shoulders press into your back and allow you to lift your upper torso away from the floor.

Let the top of your head come to the floor, and avoid crunching in your neck by only allowing a minimal amount of weight to rest on your head. Your arms and your bottom should be supporting most of the weight in Fish Pose.

Allow your throat to be soft as it opens toward the sky.

Fish Pose

Stay in this pose for 15-20 seconds, then slowly lower your head and torso back down to the earth.

This pose can also be practiced with props to support the shape. Try grabbing a few pillows and place them under your mid-back. This will help to elevate your chest and create space for your throat to open.

In addition to helping you balance your Throat Chakra, Fish Pose can also:

While this yoga pose has many benefits, it might not work in your body for whatever reason. If this pose doesn’t feel right to you, then you’ll enjoy my next yogic practice…

Ujjayi Pranayama

Also known as the ocean breath, Ujjayi Pranayama (ooh-JAH-yee prah-nah-YAH-mah) is typically used during a vinyasa flow yoga class. But it can also be done in any still posture, including a comfortable seat or reclined on your back.

Ujjayi means to be victorious, or to conquer, so this breathing technique can also infuse your body with confidence.

Find a shape that works for you where you can let your spine be long and straight. My favorite way to practice this breathwork is lying on my back. If you’re feeling tired or tend to fall asleep easily, try finding a comfortable seat instead.

Inhale normally, then exhale with your mouth open like you’re trying to fog up a mirror. You’ll hear a gentle sound.

Ujjayi Pranayama

The next step is to inhale normally, then exhale like you’re trying to fog up a mirror while keeping your mouth closed. Keep making that ocean sound in the back of your throat while your lips stay together.

Once you feel comfortable with that, try keeping your lips closed on the inhale to produce the same soft hissing sound as the exhale. Continue to make the sound when you breathe out.

You can practice this breath technique for as long as you like. Start with one minute and increase the time as you begin to feel more comfortable with it.

To master the art of Ujjayi, remember to keep the body relaxed. The sound shouldn’t be forced, but should be a gentle constriction in the back of your throat to produce the ocean-like sound

It’s the gentle constriction that you feel at the back of your throat that helps to stimulate your Throat Chakra. As prana (or energy) passes over this Chakra, it comes alive.

In addition to helping bring energy to the Throat Chakra, Ujjayi also helps you quiet your brain and smooth out the flow of your breath.

While I love these yogic practices and find them to be very beneficial, sometimes I need a little more healing.

That’s why I created these Guided Healing Sessions. They offer you a personalized solution to your health issues, so that you can quickly and easily heal any ailment that you encounter.

Now that we’ve covered how to invite more energy into this Chakra, let’s turn our attention to the ways that you can prevent energy from leaking out.

Jalandhara Bandha (Throat Lock)

A Bandha is an energetic lock that helps you maintain the optimal energy flow throughout your body. Jalandhara Bandha (jah-lahn-DHA-rah bahn-dah) is an energy lock at your throat.

First things first, find a comfortable seat. You want your spine to be straight and tall so that all seven of your Chakras are aligned.

Lengthen through the back of your neck and let your shoulder blades be relaxed.

Lift your sternum (that’s the bone right in the center of your chest) as you lower your chin down to meet it. Try to let them meet each other halfway.

Maintain openness across the front of the chest, ease through the shoulders, and length through the back of your neck.

Once you’ve found the correct positioning, breathe in to fill your lungs all the way up. Hold the breath inside your body for a few seconds, then slowly release all the air out of your body.

Throat Lock

If you’re new to this practice, there are a few ways to modify this breathwork. You can skip the breath retention and simply inhale and exhale at a normal pace. You can also inhale with the neck in a neutral position, then seal the sternum and the throat together while you exhale.

This bandha, or lock, keeps energy from leaking out of your body. Start with practicing this lock for 5 rounds of breath. As you become more comfortable with the practice, you can increase the time spent breathing this way.

If you’re able to master this yogic pranayama, then you’ll be prepared for this next pose…

Rabbit Pose

The Sanskrit name for this pose is Sasangasana, but it is also sometimes called Hare Pose, Rabbit Pose, or Hare Headstand.

Rabbit Pose is essential for your Throat Chakra because it stretches your spine all the way down through the back of your neck. It also asks you to tuck your chin into your chest.

Rabbit Pose

Start out on hands and knees, then press your hips back toward your heels to find Child’s Pose. If your knees are tender or sensitive, you may want to place a folded blanket under your knees for extra support.

From Child’s Pose, reach your arms alongside your body so that you hands clasp your calves or your heels. Depending on the length of both your arms and your torso, you might also clasp your ankles.

On an inhale draw your forehead toward your knees as you tuck your chin into your chest, perhaps letting either the crown of the head of the top of the head come to the earth.

Use your next inhale to press your knees into the ground as you lift your hips up off your ankles. Try to get your thighs perpendicular to the floor, but make sure you are not putting too much pressure in your head and neck.

Round your spine as you keep your neck nice and long, all while continuing to draw your chin to your chest.

To exit the pose, slowly lower your hips back to your heels and lengthen your arms out in front of you to return to Child’s Pose.

Rabbit Pose can also stimulate both your endocrine and your immune systems, making it a great practice to protect yourself from illness.

But even when your immune system is strong, you can still experience health issues. Whether it’s a broken leg, anxiety, or spiritual confusion, these Guided Healing Sessions can help.

They are a personalized plan to bring your entire system back into balance so that your mind, body, and soul are all healthy.
