The Power of Affirmations: How to Master Your Mind
“I’m not where I want to be.”
You’ve probably said something like this to yourself recently…
…and you haven’t really thought of a way out. That’s why you’re here.
Whether you’re a Reiki Master or someone curious about what energy healing can do for you, facing ourselves each and every day can be one of our biggest challenges. Take a look at the following statements:
“I don’t want to face the day.”
“It hurts and I don’t know what to do.”
“I feel weak.”
Chances are that you’ve felt something like this before. And you’re not alone – thousands of my students come to Reiki Infinite Healer with the same problem and ask me what to do to heal themselves.
And it’s true that Reiki can really help...
But only if you learn how to affirm yourself. You see, Reiki is only as powerful as the mentality of the person who practices.
If you constantly feed yourself negative mental thoughts, that negative energy will permeate throughout your body, no matter how experienced you are at healing.
And there’s one key technique that will help elevate your energy healing to a higher level so that you can:
- Feel energized and excited to take on the day
- Know the right path to take in your life and have the determination to take it
- Feel healthy and able to do the activities you love
- Create loving bonds with others
One of the keys to making yourself feel better with Reiki healing is to practice affirmations...
What are Affirmations?
Before I became a Reiki Master, I struggled with feelings of self-doubt. Every day was almost a chore, and I didn’t know what to do. Even when I started my training in Reiki, I felt as though something was missing.
And then it hit me – and once it did, I felt as though my world had changed forever.
Through one simple mechanism, my Reiki healing began to progress at an incredible rate. I felt happier, more fulfilled, and felt the direct change in my energy.
It felt as though the weight of the world had been lifted from my shoulders.
Now, surprisingly, this technique is actually nothing new, and you can begin practicing it right now! It’s one of the simplest things you can do to change your life immediately...
You can think of affirmations as simply a way to focus your mind on achieving a desired outcome so that you will notice opportunities to act on that will get you closer to that goal.
Perhaps the most famous practitioner of practical affirmations is Scott Adams, the creator of Dilbert. In his book, The Dilbert Principle, Adams wrote of his use of affirmations, and even though Adams was somewhat skeptical, he began to write an affirmation fifteen times a day.
He started with an affirmation to "make money in the stock market". After writing his affirmations for a month or so, he then had the idea to buy a specific stock that he felt would make money.
After a few months, he sold he stock at a tremendous profit.
Next, he affirmed a specific test score he wanted to earn in order to increase his chances at being accepted into the MBA program at UC Berkeley.
He received exactly the score he affirmed.
So how can this work for you?
The Affirmation Principle
Imagine your body as a system with channels and pathways for your energy to flow. Similarly, Reiki is a system, and for any system to work, you must begin from the foundation. Think about it:
You can push the pedal all you want on a car…but if it has no fuel, it won’t go anywhere.
You can build a house on any ground...but if it has no foundation, it will eventually crumble.
I wrote about this in my post about Lifeforce Energy Optimization and the first steps you can take to further your Reiki practice.
The key to understanding affirmations is how your mind is set before you even begin Reiki healing.
Let’s revisit some of the things that you might have said to yourself recently…
- “I’m not good enough.”
- “Am I really capable?”
- “I don’t know what I’m doing.”
- “I’m not as good as I should be.”
- “I don’t know whether this is for me.”
The core at all of these thoughts is one thing:
It’s about the situation that you’ve set for yourself before you’ve even started. It’s about the map that you’ve mentally made for yourself and the resulting energy from your thoughts and beliefs.
Your thoughts are the single most powerful shaper of your reality, and when you begin the practice of affirmations, you’ll start feeling that:
- Your mind becomes clearer and more focused
- Your body reacts and optimizes itself to a higher state
- Your Reiki healing is improving
- You’re living a happier, more fulfilled life
Remember that affirmations are the starting point for everything that follows.
However, you also need to remember that affirmations are based on you and you alone. If your energies do not align with these affirmations, then you will not see the benefit in having them.
The key to making sure your affirmations are successful is to visualize how they play out in your life - in other words, what values do you strive to live by? What is important to you? Who do you want to hold close to your heart?
The answers to these questions will help you align your affirmations with your natural body frequency instead of relying on others to fill in those gaps.
Next, we'll learn the intersectional power of visualization and affirmations.
Visualization and Affirmations
Whenever we say to ourselves, “I’m not good enough,” we imagine a better version of who we are and compare that to our current selves…
This image is powerful not because of what we said, but because of what we feel when we visualize it.
Our egos become damaged and create an imbalance in the Universal Energy that lies within us when we say negative things like this to ourselves.
So ask yourself: who is it that I want to become? Is it someone who is courageous and can stand to face the day?
Do you want to become a better healer?
Who is it that you see when you imagine this? Doesn’t that feel good?
The art of visualization brings out the true power of affirmations.
Universal Energy has a consciousness, and when you give yourself permission to let it flow throughout your body, you allow the energy to travel unrestrained, evoking emotions of unconditional self-love and gratitude.
It can be easy to miss how powerful this can be…especially when we’re already trying to master our own Reiki practice.
But I discovered that it doesn’t have to be that way – in fact, it’s even simpler than it looks…
Whether you want to become a better healer, person, or want to improve your practice, you must open your mind and trust yourself.
(By the way, if you're interested in building this self-trust through training, take a look at this Full Body Healing Session. It's a great way to release blockages that are keeping you from trusting in yourself.)
Learning To Open The Mind
Want to know a secret about affirmations?
You’ve already unknowingly been doing them...
You’ve just been unaware of their power this whole time.
With negative thoughts, this prevents you from aligning your energies properly. It took me a while to realize how much this affected me, but once I opened my mind to its power, I realized two things:
- That the outcome of my Reiki sessions were directly influenced by affirmations.
- My energy imbalance could be properly restored by using affirmations.
When you open your mind to positive affirmations, you also open your heart to the Universal Energy that is all around you.
You begin to disassociate the negative energies from yourself and invite healing to occur. And as a result…you let go of your preconceived notion of who you are and align your thoughts with a higher truth and sense of self.
Take for example, one of my favorite Reiki Invocations:
“I call upon the Universal Energy, and all those who have worked with Reiki in the past, present, and future to draw near and take part in this healing session.
I ask that the power and wisdom of the Universal Energy permits me to become a channel for its unconditional love and healing, and may its infinite wisdom go exactly where it is needed most.
May we all be empowered by your divine love and blessing.”
When you visualize the Universal Energy coursing through you, you no longer focus on your own desires and ideals, but instead reach a higher plane filled with richness, happiness, and spiritual energy.
When you open your mind, you open the ability to heal through Reiki – and this creates the opportunity for you to invite healing to happen.
Specific Ways To Start Affirming Now
As we discussed, in order to invite healing to happen, you have to open your mind. When we start a Reiki healing session with an upset mind, it’s more likely to be ineffective because we bring all the attention of negative energies to ourselves instead of allowing the Universal Energy to course through.
The reason why this is so powerful is because it creates the focus that you then bring to the healing session. If you visualize self-doubt and uncertainty, the Universal Energy will be out of your grasp…but if you use your willpower to affirm your belief and thoughts, you will be able to connect with and feel the true power of Reiki Energy.
For example, take this "Triangulation Affirmation" that I use. This is how it goes:
- Sit in a relaxed position, eyes closed, and take three deep breaths in.
- As you inhale on your fourth breath, say one thing that you are grateful for today.
- When you exhale, repeat that to yourself and visualize whatever it is that you are grateful for.
- Inhale deeply and exhale again, and concentrate on that feeling in your mind.
- On the next breath, affirm to yourself that this moment is where you belong. You can simply say, “I belong in this moment.”
- Repeat the breaths in and out and concentrate on the feeling.
- After three breaths, affirm to yourself that you are who you want to be. You can simply say, “I am a _______.”
- Repeat the breaths in and out and concentrate on visualizing that person who you want to be.
- Feel the emotion as you perceive yourself as that person and let go of the negative thoughts.
Remember that you must observe and feel holistically – when you first begin affirmations, thinking about the details will invite more negative energy.
But with practice, you will easily begin to make affirmations an integral part of your healing practice and unconsciously make affirmations. It should be noted that whereas this will come easier to some, the key is to use your willpower to invite these affirmations into your life and not force them into existence.
Your Intentions & Affirmations
To avoid overcomplicating the affirmations, you must remember to be intentional…
These are your goals or desired results from each affirmation. Whether you want to be a better person, heal an injury, or create balance, you must be deliberate. Otherwise your affirmations are words lost in the wind.
Simply wishing for something won’t make it come true – but if you use your willpower to be intentional with your affirmations, then that will reinforce the power of the healing sessions.
Think about it like this – you visit with a friend that you haven’t seen in a while, but you aren’t really looking forward to meeting - how do you think that conversation will go?
Let’s play it back – imagine that you’re now excited to visit with that friend because they probably have a lot of stories to share with you.
These two scenarios are a result from the power of intention and affirmation. Just by shifting one’s mind from inviting negative thoughts to being intentional with positive ones, you are able to create more powerful experiences with others and their Auras, yourself, and the Universal Energy.
In other words, your affirmation sets the stage for what your healing will look like and guide the rest of your practice, when you become intentional with your affirmations, you can create life-changing moments and allow powerful Reiki Healing to occur in your life.
In the next section, we’ll look at how to continuously make affirmations that take your healing and connection to the next level…
Affirmations For Life
Now that you understand the basic principles behind affirmations, let’s discuss how to use them continuously throughout your Reiki journey. Because no matter how you feel, where you are, or what you are doing, affirmations can quickly and drastically alter your healing in a positive way.
To illustrate, briefly think these things to yourself:
- “I am unrushed.”
- “I am enough.”
- “I will heal.”
- “I am capable.”
Repeat these to yourself three times following the Triangulation Affirmation from earlier in this article.
How do you feel? Simply affirming these four things can create openings for Universal Energy and gratitude to permeate your entire being.
Like Scott Adams and many Reiki healers, write down these statements and others using the following structure:
"I, (your name), am _______"
"I, (your name), will _______"
Writing these down 15 times or even 5 times a day will impact you on the subconscious level and help you expel existing negativity. Many of the ones I use personally include the following:
"I, Dave Nelson, am a healer."
"I, Dave Nelson, am enough."
"I, Dave Nelson, am capable of any and all things."
"I, Dave Nelson, will be strong, healthy, and wise."
You may feel as though you have imposter syndrome when you write or say these affirmations, but the more you say them, the more they become reflected in your reality.
Next, we'll learn how to remind yourself of your affirmations when times get tough...
Changing Poison Into Medicine
If you suffer from addiction, emotional or physical pain, negative environments, and/or a general lack of enthusiasm in life, these things can all be remediated with Reiki, and affirmations will definitely help.
Negative energies will always exist to pull you away from the Universal Energy, but if you can turn that poison into medicine, you will be able to:
- Overcome your addictions and destructive desires
- Unlock and open your Chakra points
- Harness the full potential of Reiki
Whether you’re just starting out or already have a good understanding of Reiki, it’s undeniable that affirmations are one of the most powerful things you can do to solidify your practice.
When times get tough, take out your Reiki journal and write down the affirmations we previously spoke of. If you forgot them, that's okay, I wrote them down again for you:
"I, (your name), am __________"
"I, (your name), will __________"
"I, (your name), will be(come) __________"
Your affirmations will guide the rest of your Reiki and energy healing journey, so it's crucial to remind yourself of these each and every day. It may be tough in the beginning, but you'll realize that your confidence will grow after a short time...
You'll stand taller, be more emotionally resolute, and radiate energy that will have people saying, "wow, where did you get all that energy?!"
Affirmations have helped me cultivate a stronger Reiki practice and become more confident in my healing ability.
Once you recognize the power of affirmations, you'll begin to see their effects. However, remember that affirmations are only one aspect of a larger system. Affirmations create openings to Universal Energy, but you must remember to tend to the other parts that make up the whole…
... and one of my favorite ways of doing that is with a well balanced healing session like the one here. I made this session available for people to learn and experience healing in a simple to use format. You can look at it over here.
